Here, he shares his insights on how staying organized fuels his creative process.

Bisley Store: Jesse, it’s great to meet you! Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Jesse Byrd: Hi! My name is Jesse and I am an Adult Fan of LEGO (an AFOL) and a content creator. LEGO is my hobby, my passion, and my ultimate creative outlet. I have a room dedicated to it and a major part of this hobby is organization. Sorting out LEGO bricks is no easy task, but also having a passion for organization definitely helps. LEGO is what I do in my spare time, so aside from that, I am 30 years old and married to my husband who so graciously supports my expensive hobby.

What role does organization play in your creative process?  What does it mean to feel "organized" in your world? How do you get there?

Feeling "organized" to me means feeling at peace in my workspace. Knowing exactly where to go when I'm looking for "that one thing" and everything having it's own dedicated space. Organization is an absolute must when you have a large LEGO collection, and staying organized helps me maintain my creative process. Building with LEGO can be a cluttered or messy activity, but the cleanup process is the organizational key that drives me to my next project by creating a new blank canvas on my workspace.

What drew you to your particular medium, and how has your style evolved over time?

My medium is LEGO, something I've worked with since being a kid. Like most others, I started by pouring out a bucket of LEGO bricks on the floor and letting creativity take its path. Today, I do something similar, but now I have organizers and bins and drawers of pieces, labeled and tucked away neatly. Building with a medium like LEGO, is so freeing and brings out the inner child within. My style today is different from even a few years ago, always evolving and seemingly working towards something I've yet to discover.

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing now, what other career or passion would you pursue?

If I wasn't into LEGO, I would want to be a baker or pastry chef and open my own bakery. I enjoy baking (Not sure that I'm too good at it though!) and love that it's another passion that would allow me to be creative and excite me.

What do you require of a tool to add it to your toolbox?

For a tool to be added to my toolbox, it needs to have more than a one-time use. It must be replaceable, practical, aesthetically pleasing (if possible), and do a good job with its intended function.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone looking to refine their workspace, what would it be?

Go with your instincts and allow your workspace to evolve. Don't set anything in stone, because your needs and style change overtime. Go with what brings you joy and makes you happy over what's trendy or name brand. For me, my workspace must inspire me to be creative. I need to feel happy and cozy within it, otherwise I won't feel motivated to work there. Make your workspace work for you and find a happy middle between functional and pleasing.
