Bisley Store: What drew you to your particular medium, and how has your style evolved over time?
Brianna:
I’ve always known how to sew, being the daughter of a seamstress, and I’ve always considered myself a creative person. I leaned towards painting and hand-lettering through college, but later when I decided to stay home after my second baby, I needed something that I could do that didn’t involve paint everywhere. I ordered a starter embroidery kit (which contained some of the worst cheap supplies), watched a couple YouTube tutorials and I immediately fell in love after stitching my first hoop. Four years later, my style has changed as I learned different techniques and settled into my “brand”. Once I started focusing on pattern writing, it became more of a teaching role for myself (which is fitting since I worked in education before staying home).

What role does organization play in your creative process? What does it mean to feel "organized" in your world? How do you get there?

Being an embroidery artist means I have a TON of small supplies that need a place: hoops, floss, needles, scissors, etc. Doing this as a small business means I need even more organization. I currently have a small house and a lot of kids, so I have to be creative with all of my little boxes, tubs, and shelves that I use to organize my supplies. I can’t afford to be unorganized doing what I do!

What are some of your favorite tools of the trade?
Really good fabric scissors and embroidery scissors. Heat-erasable Pilot Frixion pens. My iPad Pro + Procreate app. Containers that close that my toddlers can’t get into!

If you weren’t doing what you’re doing now, what other career or passion would you pursue?
Math teacher! It’s what my degree is in, not sure if I’ll ever return to it.

What’s the last book, movie, or song that really moved you or sparked an idea?
Reading a lot of Eric Carle books lately (one of the greats) and I sketched up a bug + flower filled design to stitch up in the spring!

What inspires you? How do you find inspiration?
What doesn’t inspire me at this point? I do a lot of book reading, music listening, and show and movie watching. I still love to hand-letter and that translates to embroidery very well, so not only can I stitch up beautiful visuals, but quotes or songs can also be thrown in.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone looking to refine their workspace, what would it be?
Since my house is under some construction and I’m currently working out of my dining room, I’d say I’m the one who needs advice, but my goals in my workspace are always to have maximum access to natural light and to value comfort and accessibility over aesthetics.
