From Wartime Pioneers to Designing the Iconic MultiDrawer: A Legacy of Innovation at Bisley
Posted by Bisley Store on Apr 8th 2026
Most storage brands don't have a story worth telling. Bisley is the exception.
The cabinet on your desk — or in your studio, your workshop, your home office — traces its roots to a garage in Surrey, England, a founder named Freddy Brown, and a World War II supply contract that had nothing to do with furniture. What came after is one of the more unlikely origin stories in design history.
We've been obsessed with Bisley long enough to know this history by heart. Here's the version worth reading.
1931: A Garage, a Panel Beater, and a Pivot
Bisley's story begins in 1931 with Freddy Brown — a panel beater with a passion for luxury cars. His garage in St John's, Woking, Surrey was originally built around repairing dented vehicles. Then the war came, and the garage became something else entirely.
During World War II, Bisley designed and produced the first containers built to survive parachute drops — a innovation that was widely adopted by airborne forces. It was precision manufacturing under serious constraints, and it gave Bisley a capability that would outlast the conflict.
After the War: Steel, a Wastepaper Bin, and a New Direction
When the war ended, Bisley had manufacturing skills and no obvious market to apply them to. The pivot came through a chance encounter with a London wholesaler who needed a simple steel wastepaper bin. Bisley made it. A new direction took hold.
From that single bin, Bisley built out a line of steel products for offices and workspaces. The material that had survived wartime conditions proved just as well-suited to the demands of everyday professional life: durable, stable, and indifferent to the kind of wear that degrades other materials over time.
1958: Freddy Brown Invents the MultiDrawer
The product that would define Bisley came in 1958. Freddy Brown, still at the helm, was inspired by the humble letter tray — a simple organizational tool — and designed the MultiDrawer cabinet around it. The idea was straightforward: compact steel drawers built for real use.
It worked. The MultiDrawer became a global bestseller, with over two million units sold. And here's the detail that says everything about the design: some of those original 1958 units are still in use today.
Expansion, Awards, and a Design That Didn't Need to Change
In 1970, leadership passed to Tony Brown, and Bisley expanded rapidly. The company introduced its first filing cabinet in the 1980s, pursued international growth, and earned the Queen's Award for Export Achievement. New product lines followed — the Universal Pedestal, the LateralFile storage system — each one applying the same manufacturing logic to different workspace needs.
The MultiDrawer, meanwhile, kept earning recognition. It recently received the Design Guild Mark — one of the most respected accolades in British design. Not for reinventing itself. For continuing to do what it always did, better than anything else in its category.
The choice of steel was always functional: it doesn't expand, contract, or degrade the way wood or plastic do. The drawer proportions were calibrated for how people actually work — what fits, what's reachable, what makes sense across a full day of use. Getting those things right in 1958 meant there wasn't much to fix later.
Beyond the MultiDrawer: The Full Bisley Line
The MultiDrawer is Bisley's most iconic product, but the same philosophy runs through everything they make. Lockers, file cabinets, wall organizers — all steel, all built to the same standard, all designed for workspaces that need storage to hold up over years of use, not months.
We carry a curated selection at Bisley Store, and for anything beyond our regular inventory, we're able to special order most Bisley pieces for delivery in the US. If something caught your eye that you don't see in the shop, reach out — we've been working with Bisley long enough to navigate most requests.
Bisley in the US: Why We Built This
We started Bisley Store because we wanted to make it easy for people in the US to get their hands on these cabinets. After years of working with Bisley UK and obsessing over the MultiDrawer, we knew the brand needed a proper home in the States — guaranteed authentic products, people who actually know the line, and service from a team that genuinely cares about getting you the right setup.
We're Bisley's official US partner, operated out of our warehouse in Belchertown, Massachusetts. When you buy from us, you're getting the real thing — and you're getting it from people who chose this brand specifically because they believed in it.
A Legacy Worth Owning
Ninety-plus years. A wartime origin. A founder who invented a global bestseller. A design that earned recognition decades after it was first made. A lot of things claim to be built to last. Bisley's actually got the history to prove it.
